The
Congregational Church was brought to America by the Mayflower passengers. They
went by several names: Pilgrims for they were religious travelers, Puritans for
they wanted to make their church better and Congregationalists for they believed
that the will of God could be found in the collective conscious of the
congregation.
The Interlachen Congregationalists are the direct descendants of those pilgrims
and take pride in their long history of religious freedom.
The First
Congregational Church
of Interlachen was the first church in
Interlachen. Mr. George Hastings planned and helped finance the building
of Interlachen's first church. It began on February 6th 1884, with the
Rectory coming later, across the street from his house on Tropic and Washington
Streets. He enjoined the early settlers from the Presbyterian, Methodist
and Episcopal faiths to join together under the Congregational denomination.
They met in the Hastings home with Professor Woodbury from the Congregational
Church Ministries, with each person pledging no less than $400 to building a
church on land donated by Hastings.
